The Lady Bulldogs stellar season came to an abrupt end this past week as the West girls were ushered from the James C. Haile state tournament in Murfreesboro by Savannah Christian, 48-31.
The loss concluded their 2018-19 campaign at 20-4, the Lady Bulldogs losing only a single game in their early season Best of the West Tournament to Hermitage Springs, one game at Gordonsville, one game at the Fork’s River Tournament, against to Hermitage Springs and their opening game loss at the state playoffs against Savannah Christian.
It was trouble early for the Lady Bulldogs as Savannah’s Reese Harville went off in the first and never stopped as she scored six in the first on her way to leading all scorers with 29. Her offensive prowess gave her squad a 13-7 lead over West after one. However, the second was when Madison Martin came alive for the Lady Bulldogs, scoring seven points on her way to a 22-point performance in the losing effort. West trailed by 23-19 at half.
The third proved to be a defensive period as West was held without a field goal, scoring only three points from the foul line. Meanwhile, Savannah wasn’t shooting the lights out either, scoring just six in the third. West trailed by six going into what would be the final quarter of their season.
It was the fourth were Harville again went off, this time from the charity stripe as West sent her to the line 11 times in the last frame. She canned 10 of 11 free throws to help boost her squad to a 19-9 scoring advantage in the fourth and ultimately seal the deal for Savannah Christian.
Contributing in the scoring column along with Martin were Ally Griffith with three, Aniston Farler, Emma Martin and Alyssa Crook, all with two.
