West hit a fork in the road this past week as they were swept by Fork’s River, the girls falling 49-30 while the boys were edged 30-28.
In the case of the girls game, it was all about Marissa Spivey of the Fork’s River squad as she nearly outscored West by herself, bucketing 26 points on the night as none of her teammates even broke double digits. And, her damage mainly came in the third quarter in what had been a fairly tight game up until then, Spivey had nine points in the period, helping spur the winning run for Forks.
West held the lead after one thanks to Tess Barton who scored four of her team leading 12 in the first. However, flashes from Spivey in the quarter helped Forks get out to an 18-14 lead.
Barton did what she could to counter the Spivey onslaught in the third quarter, scoring six of her own. Despite that, the Lady Bulldogs found themselves on the wrong side of a 31-23 score going into the final period. The stretch run was unkind as West was outscored 13-7 in the fourth as Forks held on for victory.
Helping West in scoring were Alyssa Crook with eight, Ella Hendrixson with six and Emily Young with four.
On the boys side, it was a close one with Forks getting out to a 7-6 advantage after one in a quarter that saw Wesley McCowan score all six points for West, four of those coming from the free throw line as he was perfect from the charity stripe in the opening stanza. He led the Bulldogs with 11 on the night.
The second saw West go on a run as they put up 13 in the frame with Alex Antoniak leading the way with five of his game high seven.
Holding a four point lead going into the second half, the Bulldogs built on it, getting it up to seven by the final period. However, a flurry of fourth quarter scoring saw the lead erased as Jackson Duke put up seven by himself, equaling the output of the entire West squad in the fourth. The late run was enough to seal the deal for Forks.
