The DeKalb West School basketball teams got in one last night of games last week before taking a break for the holidays, traveling to Southside in Wilson County. It would be a victorious night for both teams.
In the Lady Bulldogs’ game, DWS jumped out with the lead in the first period. Camille Barton came away with a couple of two-point baskets, while Kenedee Prichard had one. Sophie Desimone added a free throw point. Southside was held to just two points. DWS was up 7-2.
Southside fired back in the second period, putting 10 points on the board. The Lady Bulldogs were held to just three, off of a two-pointer by Hannah Brown and a free throw by Barton. Southside claimed a 12-10 halftime lead.
The Lady Bulldogs came out fighting in the third period, scoring 13 points. Barton and Desimone each had a pair of two-pointers, while Brown had one. Prichard added a pair of free throws while Autumn Crook got on the board with one free throw. Southside was held scoreless, giving DWS the 23-12 lead.
Brown and Desimone each scored a two-point basket for the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth. It would be all the points DeKalb would see, but Southside was also held to four. DWS would take the 27-16 win.
The boys’ game would be much more of a battle, with the match being decided in overtime. The Bulldogs scored four points in the first period off of two-pointers by Chase Young and Drew Cook. Southside would jump out with nine points.
It would be Young and Porter Hancock for the Bulldogs in the second period, each with a pair of two-point baskets. Southside would put nine on the board and take the 18-12 lead at the half.
Again it was Young and Hancock in the third period, Young with a couple of free throws, while Hancock had a two-pointer. Southside added nine more to the board, taking a 27-16 lead.
The Bulldogs lit up in the fourth period, coming away with 15 points. Young sank a pair of two-point shots and two free throws, while Hancock added a two-point basket and one free throw. Ben Barton got on the board with a couple of two-point shots, while Cook added a two-pointer of his own. Southside was held to seven points, tying the game at 34.
In overtime, the Bulldogs continued where they left off, scoring 10 points. Hancock put up three two-point baskets, while Young had a two-pointer and a couple of free throws. Southside was held to just one point, giving the Bulldogs the 44-35 overtime win.
