An offensive explosion in the third period gave the Lady Bulldogs a come from behind win against Hillham this past week, followed up by a blowout two nights later of the visiting Watertown squad.
Things weren’t looking great for the Lady Bulldogs in the early going as Hillham got out of the gate fast, taking a 14-8 lead with four of their players contributing to the early run. Aly Griffith helped West keep pace, scoring four of her game total 10 in the opening quarter. The home squad was able to rally a bit in the second as Madison Martin and Ella Hendrixson both tallied four for the Lady Bulldogs, helping them outscore Hillham by a single point in the first. Martin shared top scorer honors with Griffith on the night with 10.
Faced with a 27-22 deficit coming out of the locker room after the half, the Lady Bulldogs got busy with Martin lighting the board up again with six in the period. The eruption accounted for 18 third period points while Hillham seemed to forget where the basket was as they could only put up seven they watched their lead disappear by the end of the stanza.
Things got even worse for Hillham in the fourth as they were only able to hit a pair of field goals while their hosts put up nine points to set the final score at 49-38.
The girls would continue their winning streak two nights later when they played host to Watertown, sending their visitors home with 42-23 loss in a game they dominated from the opening tip. It was a Martin kind of night as Emma Martin and Madison Martin led all scorers with 11.
Unlike the girls in the Hilham game, the boys of West were to mount a late run but instead were the victim of a massive fourth quarter scoring barrage by Hillham.
West closed to a 21-18 disadvantage at half, the Hillham lead cut into thanks to five points by Alex Antoniak was scored five of his game total nine in the second.
It appeared West may be making a run in the third as they got to within one by the end of the quarter. However, the flood gates opened in the fourth with Hilliam’s Chris Lyons going unconscious for 12 points. The Bulldogs were unable to answer as a pair of field goals each by Brown and Noah Evans were not enough to keep pace in the 46-38 loss.
The boys would rebound a couple of nights later, defeating Watertown 37-28. Isaac Brown led the way in the win with 20 points in a game the Bulldogs led throughout the last three quarters. John Ellis contributed six while Alex Antoniak had four. Jamison Marler and Noah Evans both chipped in three and Wesley McCowan had one.
