The West girls took the early lead and didn’t look back as they scored a win over the visiting Southside squad this past week, 38-29.

For West, it was Madison Martin early and often as she got out to a white hot start, hitting two long range shots from beyond the arch in the first, scoring eight in the opening stanza on the way to leading all scorers with 16 on the night. Not to be left out, Emma Martin jumped on the scoring train, notching five points of her own in the first on her way to 14 on the night.

While able to keep pace in the first with scoring by Camryn Langley and Lillian Crutchfield, the Southside shooters would get silenced in the second, outscored by their hosts 13-7. The second half offered a ray of light for the visitors as they were able to outscore West 8-4; however, the scoring run was not enough to erase their nine point half-time deficit as the Lady Bulldogs righted the ship in the fourth quarter, doubling up Southside 8-4 in scoring.

Contributing offensively to the win were Ally Griffith and Tess Barton with four and Alyssa Crook with two.

In the boys’ game, the Bulldogs were unable to get it done despite another huge outing by Isaac Brown who had 17 on the night as they lost a squeaker, 38-34 to Southside.

While Brown had a large evening, so did Quin Lung from Southside who led all scorers with 20. His output was bolstered by Wyatt Bowling who added 11 for the visitors on the way to their win.

West got off to a good start, holding an 8-6 lead after one. However, Lung’s eight points in the second offset Brown’s seven, giving the visitors a three point advantage at half.

Both teams saw their offenses flame out in the third as they squads combined for just eight points, four of Southside’s six coming from the foul line.

John Ellis had six of his seven in the final quarter but it wasn’t enough to catch Southside who escaped with a win.

Helping in scoring was Alex Antoniak with eight and Noah Evans with two.
