The West Bulldogs got the season off to a good start as they won their opener, beating Watertown 40-27. The Lady Bulldogs were not so fortunate as they fell 36-15 just days after claiming third place in the Fork’s River Tournament.
Things didn’t look promising for the West boys in the first quarter of their season opener as Watertown jumped out to a 9 to 5 lead after one. However, the Bulldogs found their range in the second as Wesley McCowan tallied seven points in the stanza, his performance buttressed by Alex Antoniak who added four to give the Bulldogs a 16-14 lead going into the half. The third proved to be a push as both team scored nine points. Watertown’s Marcus Reynolds led all scorers in the third frame with five points.
The fourth period proved to be the deciding stanza as West doubled up Watertown, outscoring them 12-6. McCowan had eight of those points, half coming from the free throw line.
He led West in scoring on the night, scoring 17. Antoniak and Carson Donnell both had eight while Brayden Carter had five and Brayden Saliski two.
As for the Lady Bulldogs, the first period was kind as Tess Barton got off to a good start with six points. However, that is where the good fortunate ended as they were outscored 11 to four in the second stanza with Watertown’s Jayleigh Robertson going off to lead all scorers while single-handed outscoring the Lady Bulldogs with 19 points on the night.
The final straw came in the fourth period when the Lady Bulldogs were shutout while giving up eight points. Barton led her team with eight while Alyssa Crook had five and Emily Young had two.
