The Tigers traveled to White County last Monday night to take on the Warriors in their last game before the district play-offs began on Tuesday, also taking place in White County. The Tigers walked away with victory by a final score of 63-53.
In the first quarter, the lead changed six times, but when the first period was over it was White County who came out on top outscoring the Tigers 16-14.
Braxton Atnip would lead the Tigers in the period with four points. Four other players contributed to help the Tigers keep the game close.
In the second quarter, the Tigers busted loose with a 16-point period all the while allowing only 10 points to put the Tigers on top going into the half 30-26.
The Tigers’ were led in scoring in the second by Sonni Young as he dropped in nine.
After the half, the Warriors slightly edged by the Tigers outscoring them 16-15. White County was propelled by a 8-2 run during the period. The Tigers’ leading scorer for the period was Stephen Howell with nine.
In the fourth quarter, Stephen Howell had the hot hand as he again led the period for the Tigers in scoring, dropping in nine for a total of 18 second half points. The Tigers outscored the Warriors 18-11.
The Tigers were led in scoring by Stephen Howell with 24 followed by Sonni Young with 20. Lucas Phillips finished with seven while Braxton Atnip scored four. Will Molander and Ethan Roller each had three and Braxton Howell had two. Howell and Young would account for almost 70 percent of the teams offense.
Sonni Young eclipsed the 1,000 point mark last Tuesday night as the Tigers took part in the first round in the district tournament. The Tigers took on Central Magnet, a team they beat twice through the season. The Tigers proved history does repeat itself as they easily defeated their opponents 55-29.
In the first quarter, DeKalb County went on a 14-0 run, holding Central Magnet scoreless till the 3:40 mark in the period. The Tigers let it known that they were ready for player Sonni Young to hit the career mark of 1,000 points. Young who was just 13 points shy before the game, exploded in the period with 10 points leading the team in scoring for the period and outscoring Central Magnet 20-4.
In the second quarter, with just three points to go, it was quit obvious that the Tigers were waiting for Young to hit his mark before they would take him out of the game with such a large lead.
With 5:54 to go in the second period Young nailed two free-throw shots to bring him within one point of the much sought after career accomplishment. Young got his chance at the 5:30 mark as he was passed the ball just under the goal and laid it in for his 1,001 point of his career.
The Tigers again held their opponents to low digit figures as they allowed only six points in the period. Central Magnet was scoreless until the 3:36 mark when they gave up two foul shots.
The Tigers scored 17 as they extended their lead over Central Magnet 37-10 Young again led the Tigers in the period with 10 as he would sit the rest of the game with 20 total points.
In the third quarter, with a certain victory in sight, Coach Martin sat down the entire starting line-up to rest and prevent an injury, and brought in the junior-varsity players.
The Tigers’ j.v squad outscored Central Magnet 8-6 to bring the score at 45-16.
In the fourth quarter, it was the freshmen team that took the floor for the Tigers. Central Magnet outscored the Tigers this time 12-10.
The leading scorer in the fourth period for the Tigers was Braxton Atnip as he dropped in two three-pointers.
For the game, the Tigers were led in scoring by Sonni Young who scored 20 ,followed by Braxton Atnip with eight. Aaron Patterson tossed in seven while Lucas Phillips and Braxton Howell had six each. Ethan Roller added five and Zach Vincent finished with three.
The Tigers took on the Upperman Bees in the semi-final game in the district tournament. The Tigers buzzed past the Bees moving on to the district championship game against Livingston Academy, winning by a score of 61-47.
In the first quarter, each team came out strong on both sides of the ball and keept their mistakes to a minimum. The Tigers outscored the Bees 11-7 led by Lucas Phillips and Sonni Young who dropped in four each to help DeKalb to their early lead.
In the second quarter, the Tigers’ defense was all but perfect, holding the high-powered offense of the Bees’ to just 10 points while the Tiger offense held steady with 10 points as well bringing the score to 21-17 at halftime.
The period had proved to be a great on for DeKalb as they never relinquished their lead, the Tigers’ leading scorer for the period was Stephen Howell with seven.
In the third quarter, the Bees broke out with six unanswered point in just under a minute to open the second half. Later on in the third DeKalb trumped the six-point run of the Bees going on a 17-0 run of their own and extending their lead to 45-30.
The Tigers outscored the Bees 24-13 and were led in the period in scoring by Stephen Howell as he added eight more to his total.
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers could taste victory as they had a 15-point lead, going into the final period of play.
The Bees had finally outscored the Tigers 17-16, but the lead the Tigers’ had established early on had proved to be to much for the Bees to deal with along with near perfect defense the Tigers came away victorious and advance to the final game.
The Tigers were lead in scoring by Stephen Howell with 19, followed by Sonni Young and Lucas Phillips who each bagged in 13. Ethan Roller tossed in seven, Braxton Atnip added six and Will Molander Contributed three.
