On Thursday night the DeKalb County basketball team and cheerleaders celebrated their yearly banquet for the 2011-2012 season.
The night was full of excitement as awards were to be handed out in recognition on this past season’s success. Players and cheerleaders wore their Sunday’s best for the gathering.
Players were not the only people to receive awards as Coach Martin presented the award for the “Fans of the Year,” which was given to brothers Edward and Edzell Frazier for their complete commitment to Tiger basketball through out the year. The brothers were recognized with a standing ovation.
The cheerleaders were handed out awards from cheerleading coach Natasha Judkins. The awards for cheerleading were Most Spirited: Kelsey Hale; Best Stunts: Victoria Vincent; Best Attitude: Taneah Cantrell; Most Improved: Morgan Mullican; Best Dance: Christian Atnip; Best Jumps: Jasmine Dimas; STAR (Spirit, Team, Attitude, Respect): Ashlee Whitehead; and the MVC award went to Ally Judkins.
The Lady Tigers basketball team’s awards handed out by Coach Cope were Best Rebounder: Lydia Foutch; Most Improved: Danielle Tyson; Best Passer: Abbey Caldwell; Best Practice Player: Ashley Barnes; Tiger Award and named to the All-Freshman District team: Loren Cripps; Best Attitude: Chelsea Cantrell; Best Free-Throw Shooter and Offensive MVP: Chelsea Lewis. Named to Second-team 8-AA and taking home awards for Best Defender, Hustle Award, Coaches Award and Team MVP was Alex Meadows.
The boys’ team awards handed out by Coach Martin were Most Improved: Lucas Phillips; Best Passer: Will Molander; Best Practice Player: Zach Vincent; Best Sixth-Man: Ethan Roller; Best Attitude and Hustle Award: Eli Lomas; Third-team All-District, Best Free-Throw Shooter, Best Ball Handler and Offensive MVP: Steven Howell; Second-Team All-District and Smartest Player: Braxton Atnip; First-Team All-District, District Defensive Player of the Year, Best Defender, Best Rebounder and Team MVP: Sonni Young.
