Rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for Customer Appreciation Day at the Smithville Review this past week as nearly 200 people poured into the office for hot dogs and great deals on subscriptions.
Subscriptions were offered for the unheard of price of $30 per year during the one day event, drawing over 50 subscribers to extend their paper delivery or start a new subscription. While stopping off for their subscriptions and to meet with the Review staff, customers enjoyed grilled hot dogs, baked beans, chips, cookies and drinks. Others were even luckier as they won door prizes.
Jack Tubb never dreamed he would be selected as the lucky winner of the grand prize awarded by the Smithville Review as part of its Customer Appreciation Day Wednesday. He was in for a surprise.
“I was sitting on the couch, watching the evening news when I got the call,” Jack said of learning he had been drawn out of the hat and had won a brand new kayak. “I never dreamed I’d win it. I thought I’d just enter for fun and see what happened.”
Actually, Jack said his interest was getting a subscription to the Review for $30. “You can’t beat that price,” Jack said when he arrived to pick up his kayak. “I wanted to make sure to take advantage of it. That’s for a whole year. It’s quite a discount.”
Jack noted that his win marks the first time he has “legitimately” won a drawing. “When I was a little kid, I won a drawing of a pitcher,” Jack recalled, pointing out his sister, also very young at the time was the one who drew his name out of the hat. “I later found out she had held my entry between her fingers when she was drawing the winner.”
Jack said he gave back the plastic pitcher when he found out about the situation. “This is the first time I’ve won a drawing without someone helping me out,” Jack laughed.
Jack said he plans to put the kayak to use in the near future, noting he is going to do something most people don’t do first – read the instruction manual.
Other winners of prizes from the Review drawing included D. R.R. Atnip, Barbara Comfort, Betty Jo Cantrell, Shan Williams, Betty Cooper, Treva White, Ira Umstead, Jeanette Smithson, Jewell Ponder, Walter Johnson, Tessa Paulson, Carolyn Mathis and Royce Odom.
