After first leaving a note where he signed his name, a Smithville man recently released from jail on bond visited the home of DeKalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray to further express his aggravation with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s department.
Michael Brandon Redmon, 33, of Smithville went to Sheriff Ray’s home in DeKalb County Monday night on two separate occasions watching the house, beating on the front door and defacing the driveway, sidewalk and porch with white paint. Sheriff Ray was not at home when the incident occurred but his wife was there and called him.
“During the morning hours of Monday, Oct. 6, my wife was walking out to her vehicle to go to work when she noticed a note stuck on my county vehicle with a big sticker. It was from Michael Redmon, as it had his name on there a couple of times,” said Sheriff Ray.
According to Sheriff Ray, Redmon had been arrested on Thursday, Oct. 12 by the Smithville Police Department for theft of property and that he was released on Saturday, Oct. 14 after posting bond. Upon entering the jail there were some items taken from him and upon his release on bond correctional officers could not give certain items back. Redmon became aggravated because he couldn’t get the items back.
“After I found the note I removed it from my vehicle. Later on that night I was working at the jail and went out on a theft case with detectives to make an arrest where we recovered stolen property, when I received a call from my wife,” Ray said. “She reported a gentleman had come up to the door of our residence and beat on the door where she witnessed him walking back out to the roadway staring at the house. The man left and later returned and beat on the door a second time where she witnessed him on the porch going out to the yard and staring at the house again whereupon she called me to let me know what was going on.”
Sherriff Ray and detectives went to his property but Redmon was nowhere to be found as they secured his home.
“I noticed white footprints coming from Belk Grocery that looked like paint they came from the store to my house up the driveway, on the sidewalk and on the porch,” said Ray. “I went and found where the paint was. It had been poured out by owners of Belk Grocery in a ditch on the other side of the road.”
Sheriff Ray and the detectives were able to obtain video surveillance footage of Redmon going to the paint, noticing and intentionally stepping in it and walking towards his residence. Initially, as Redmon approached the home the paint wore off his shoes so he returned to the paint and picked up two handfuls of paint-covered grass and put it in at Ray’s driveway, stepped in it again and walked on Ray’s sidewalk and porch making more footprints.
“My detectives and deputies had been searching for Redmon since the incident and were able to locate him Thursday in Warren County. They contacted Warren County authorities and Redmon was picked up for a violation of probation. He was brought back to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department. The detectives talked to Redmon and he admitted to going to my house saying that he was aggravated. He confessed to stepping in the paint and walking up my driveway and on the porch," Ray said.
“This is not the first time something like this has happened to a law enforcement officer but whether it is me, another law enforcement officer, judge, anyone affiliated with the judicial system, or victim of crime we will not allow this type of behavior. Retaliation against any crime victim will not be tolerated,” Sheriff Ray said.
Redmon is being held in DeKalb County Jail without bond due to his parole violation and has a court date of Nov. 16. His bond for the previous violations was $22,500. Additional charges stemming from Monday’s incident are aggravated criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct, vandalism, and retaliation for a past action.
