The local AmVets post (#122) held a memorial day program at the 303 building in Smithville Monday, followed by a "Grand Reunion of the 16th Tennessee Infantry" hosted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Savage-Goodner Camp.The AmVet’s program featured live music by gospel group "4 the Lord" featuring George Storie, and adresses by Edward Frazier and Bobby ThomasonThe SCV event featured remarks by Savage Goodner Camp SCV Historian Shawn Jacobs and Commander Mike Corley, followed by a barbeque lunch and live entertainment by an authentic nineteenth-century musical performance by Drew Fedak and his band.Jacobs read a poem titled “Memorial Day” for the occasion, and Local Historian Tommy Webb gave a detailed account of the hardships faced by the men of the 16th Tennessee Infantry.Webb said that a thousand men from the Caney Fork area volunteered to serve their country 150 years ago as part of a Confederate regiment called the 16th Tennessee Infantry.Former Congressman John Savage was selected as their colonel.These men struggled across battlefields in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina.By the end of the war, less than one hundred of these men came home alive.A memorial wreath was laid at the memorial on the courthouse sqare by the Am Vets, and the SCV placed a wreath at the Confederate Memorial Monument. Later in the afternoon a gravemarker was placed at the site of a previously unmarked confederate grave in the Belk community.
