Who makes the best chili in DeKalb County? Find out on Friday, Oct. 28 when Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County hosts its 8th annual Chili Cook-off and Bake Sale.
Chili will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 303 Building on the town square. You can purchase your bowl for $5, eat all the chili you want, and vote for your favorite chili and the best decorated booth. Handmade pottery bowls will be available for $10. Delicious baked goods prepared by members of local churches will also be for sale. Take-out is also available.
"We are looking forward to another great day of good food and fellowship at the chili cook-off," said Sharon Evans, president of Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County.
"In January 2012, we plan to begin the application process to find our next partner family," said Evans. "The proceeds from the Chili Cook-off will be used towards building the next house, so we hope everyone will come out and eat lots of chili for a great cause!"
At press time, the teams competing in the Chili Cook-off are "The Bumpers Team" from Bumpers; "Wild West Gang" from the DeKalb County Board of Education; "Hot Checks Chili" from DeKalb Community Bank; "The Courthouse Gang" from the DeKalb County Officials "Hale’s Bowls of Fire" from James C. Hale; "Comfort Builders" from Middle Tennessee Natural Gas; "Building Chili-One Bean at a Time" from Habitat for Humanity and Art Revolution.
Last year, The Inn at Evins Mill won the "Best Chili" award, and "Cauldren of Fire" from the DeKalb County Board of Education followed in second place. In the decorating contest, the "Hillbilly Chili – It’s Natural Gas" from Middle Tennessee Natural Gas won first place honors. The 2010 event raised approximately $2,800.
