DCHS softball standout Kristena Bain signed Thursday to play college ball at Cumberland University and pursue a degree in nursing.

Having already obtained her CNA licenses, Bain – the 17-year-old daughter of Bobby and Ann Rader – was a member of the DCHS Student Council, vice-president of the Spanish Club, member of DCHS Climate Crew and HOSA and was a four-year member of the Tigerettes.

“I have always believed that with the right attitude and an outstanding work ethic, anything is possible,” Bain said. “Never take ‘no’ for an answer, stay true to yourself, be humble, and always let God light the way.”

Head Softball Coach Danny Fish recalled that Bain always had her sights set on continuing her playing days into the post-secondary levels.

“I’m excited for Kristena; it’s something she’s been working towards for a long time,” said Fish. “I can remember when I first moved back; sixth grade I started hitting with her and it was a goal of hers then. When kids set up goals and then it comes up front and there it is … I love it, there’s nothing better. She’s a relentless worker and teammate. She really puts in the time and it’s definitely showed.”

Bain makes the third DCHS student who will be playing for the current Cumberland squad.

“We’re excited to have Kristena,” said Cumberland University Softball Coach Stephanie Theall. “We’ve always had good products out of DeKalb High School and they’ve always been successful for us. We have two currently, Tyra Graham and Kayley Caplinger, and they’ve both been amazing. Cap is a freshman this year and we expect the same thing out of Kristena.”

Bain still has a season of Tigereette softball to play before she graduates, so fans can cheer her on March 3 with a play day – time still to be determined.
