State Senator Mae Beavers came out on top of the 17th District senate race in the Republican Primary Thursday, defeating challenger Clark Boyd 16,164 votes to 11,100 in the district, and 1,344 to 563 in DeKalb County.
Beavers will run unopposed in the general election in November. The 17th District includes DeKalb, Wilson, Cannon, Smith, Macon, and Clay counties.
Meanwhile, 40th District State Representative Terri Lynn Weaver and 46th District State Representative Mark Pody were unopposed in the GOP primaries. Weaver received 1,322 votes, while Pody took 337 votes in DeKalb County. Weaver received 7,745 votes in the district, and Pody got 7,543 votes.
Sarah Marie Smith (40th District) received 713 votes in DeKalb County in the state Democratic Primary, while Candace Reed (46th District) garnered 345 votes. Smith was unopposed in the primary, and will challenge Weaver in the November election. Reed was also unopposed in the primary, and will face Pody in November. Smith took 3,560 votes in the district, while Reed received 2,487 votes.
The 40th District includes much of DeKalb County, all of Smith and Trousdale Counties and a some of Sumner County.
The 46th district includes part of DeKalb County, all of Cannon County, and a portion of Wilson County.
