35-year-old Jeri Nicole Beckham has been charged with 18 counts of forgery by city police.
According to Smithville Police Chief Randy Caplinger, Beckham is accused of taking a family member’s checkbook without permission and writing checks to herself on at least 18 different occasions in October of last year. She allegedly forged the victim's name on the checks and cashed them. The amounts of the checks ranged from $75 to $350, and reportedly totaled $3,600.
Her total bonds were set at $85,000.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Jonathan Hummel was charged with use of inhalants.
The chief said that police were called to Walmart in reference to a suspicious man in a car outside the retail outlet. The officer allegedly found Hummel, who had apparently been cited by another officer earlier the same day for huffing compressed air from a computer cleaner can on the same property.
The policeman reportedly located Hummel in a vehicle in the parking lot of the business, huffing again. His speech was allegedly slurred, and police said he appeared to be intoxicated.
His bond was set at $2,500.
Johnny Devault, 31, has been charged with aggravated assault and violation of bond conditions.
Caplinger said police were summoned to an apartment on Miller Road to investigate reports of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, the officer heard shouting from the apartment, and was told that Devault and a female had been in an argument that turned physical.
The victim's left eye was reportedly swollen from the assault. A witness told police that Devault had smacked the woman in the face several times.
His bonds totaled $5,000.
Leslie Lawrence, 27 has been charged with domestic violence. Caplinger said an officer dispatched to a domestic violence call at a Foster Road home and spoke with a man who said that Lawrence had kicked him in the face and ripped the phone cord off the wall to prevent him from calling for help. Lawrence was found to be intoxicated, and was arrested as the primary aggressor.
Her bond was set at $2,500.
Hayle Hunt, 19 has been charged with domestic assault.
The chief said an officer responding to a domestic complaint at a Braswell Lane residence was informed that Hunt and her husband had been arguing, and the husband had red marks on his face, and claimed that Hunt had struck him. Hunt allegedly rammed her truck into his truck as well.
Her bond was set at $2,500.
Debroah Jose, 59, has also been charged with domestic assault. Jose allegedly assaulted her ex-daughter in law at an Odom Street home, hitting her on the head leaving a red swollen place.
Her bond was set at $1,500.
Gregory Wayne Cripps, 41, has been charged with his second offense of driving under the influence and driving on a revoked license.
The police chief said an officer saw Cripps stop in the wrong lane at a stop sign while driving a Nissan Altima on West Bryant Street. He then allegedly drove onto South Mountain Street, crossed the center line several items, and almost hit oncoming vehicles.
Cripps reportedly turned onto Miller Road, and into a parking lot, where the officer approached his car, and found his speech to be slurred and that he was unsteady on his feet. Cripps reportedly submitted to, and performed poorly on, field sobriety tasks. A check revealed that that Cripps license was also revoked for a prior DUI, and he was placed under arrest.
His bond was set at $4,000.
