A 21-year-old Nashville man faces three felony charges after hitting a Tennessee Highway Patrol cruiser while trying to evade police on a motorcycle Memorial Day afternoon.
According to Sean Tramel of the THP, Coley Hicks was charged with evading arrest by vehicle, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. Hicks was also cited for failure to exercise due care, lack of insurance, speeding, improper passing and running a red light.
Tramel said he met Hicks while he was traveling west on highway 70 near Dale Ridge. Hicks was headed east when the trooper reportedly clocked him at 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. Tramel said Hicks accelerated and fled toward Smithville, and the lawman activated his emergency equipment and initiated a pursuit.
The trooper said he chased the bike through Smithville, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph, and Hicks blew through all three stop lights on Highway 70, never slowing down.
“I terminated the pursuit near the Midnight Express on Sparta Highway,” Tramel said. “I was losing sight of him, and I didn’t want to push him through those curves and risk getting someone seriously hurt.”
The trooper said he pulled over at the Midnight Express, and after 3-4 minutes, pulled back onto the Highway and headed east, driving to the White County line to ensure that Hicks had not lost control of the bike and crashed. When he saw no sign of the bike, he returned to the Midnight Express parking lot to check his odometer and note the distance of the pursuit for his report. He said it had been 17 minutes since he had terminated the pursuit of the rider.
That’s when things apparently got a little weird.
“As I pulled out of the parking lot and headed back toward Smithville, I heard a motorcycle coming up the hill,” Tramel said. “When he came around the curve, he saw me and just stopped, pulling to the side of the road just before the entrance to the parking lot. We stared at each other for several seconds, waiting for each other to make a move. I activated my lights again and drove straight up to him. He still didn’t move.
The trooper said he pulled his car directly in front of the bike, and Hicks continued to sit where he was. “I opened my door and started to get out of the car, and he accelerated into my open door, knocking me back into the car,” Tramel said.
Hicks reportedly careened off the door of the patrol car and struck the guardrail, then came off the bike and slid to a stop in the roadway. The trooper quickly recovered and apprehended Hicks, who at that point reportedly put his hands up and declared “I’m done, I’m done.” Hicks allegedly told authorities that he ran because he had no insurance.
Hicks and Tramel both escaped serious injury during the incident.
