Smithville police have arrested a local man on charges that he broke into a residence at City Walk Apartments and assaulted a neighbor with a knife.
Authorities said Russell Blackwel1, 37, faces charges of aggravated assault and aggravated burglary.
According to Detective Brandon Donnell, the alleged stabbing occurred last Tuesday.
“Sergeant Andy Snow contacted me and I initiated an investigation. It was determined that Blackwell forced his way into an apartment, causing damage to the front door, and started fighting with the resident there,” the detective shared.
“As another neighbor got between the two to try and break up the fight, Blackwell allegedly pulled a large kitchen knife and cut the neighbor who was trying to stop the fight several times.”
Donnell said Blackwell fled the apartment after the incident, and allegedly threw the knife on top of the building before returning to his own apartment in the complex.
Witnesses reportedly identified Blackwell as the offender, and police placed him under arrest at his apartment.
Police said the knife was retrieved from the top of the apartment building and held as evidence.
The victim of the alleged assault was transported to DeKalb Community Hospital by DeKalb EMS, where he was treated and released.
Blackwell’s bonds total $20,000 and he will appear in court on Oct. 31.
While investigating the assault at City Walk, Snow was reportedly approached by a victim who stated that a family member had struck her in the mid-section with his cane.
Police said the victim had bruising on her torso, and arrested Royce Virgel Ashford Jr., 43, for domestic assault. His bond was set at $2,500, and he will appear in court on Oct. 31.
Meanwhile 29-year-old Roxanne Landis was also arrested that night at City Walk Apartments for public intoxication. Police said she appeared to be under the influence of something.
She was allegedly unsteady on her feet and was causing a nuisance for the public and law enforcement officials investigating the alleged stabbing.
Landis was reportedly asked to return to her apartment several times, but kept coming back outside and causing a disturbance. Her bond was set at $1,500, and she will appear in court on Oct. 31.
Valerie M. Brown, 37, was arrested for burglary on Oct. 10.
Police said Captain Steven Leffew was dispatched to West Main Street to check out reports of a vehicle parked in the road causing a traffic hazard. Upon arrival and investigation of the situation, Leffew reportedly observed broken glass and a damaged door at the residence where the vehicle was parked.
Officer Matt Farmer reportedly helped with a search of the house, and the two lawmen allegedly found Brown hiding in a closet inside the residence.
Her bond was set at $5,000.
Aaron Dwayne Ponder, 35, was cited for unlawful paraphernalia on Oct. 3.
According to city police, K-9 Officer James Cornelius saw Ponder remove several hypodermic needles from his pants pocket and throw them into a garbage can at Jewel's Market on South Congress Blvd.
He will appear in court on Nov. 7.
Rachel Lynn Mabe, 41, was cited for simple possession on Oct. 3. Officer Will Judkins was dispatched to South Congress Boulevard to investigate reports of a reckless driver.
Upon making contact with the vehicle and finding Mabe to be the driver, Judkins reportedly performed a welfare check and found 20 pills believed to be Hydrocodone in Mabe's possession. she allegedly had no prescription for the pharmaceuticals.
She will appear in court on Nov. 7.
Heather Leigh Standridge, 23, faces a DUI charge after she was arrested by K-9 Officer Cornelius on Oct. 4.
According to police, Cornelius responded to reports of a possibly impaired driver on East Broad Street. Upon making contact with the driver, Heather Standridge, he noticed her to have slurred speech. She was requested to perform sobriety tasks to which she reportedly performed poorly.
Her bond was set at $2,500, and she will appear in court on Nov. 7.
James Mathew Crowe, 20, was charged with domestic assault on Oct. 7.
According to the warrant, Crowe assaulted his ex-girlfriend by picking her up from a sitting position and throwing her onto the ground, causing a bruise on her arm.
His bond was set at $2500, and he will appear in court on Oct. 31.
Police said Officer Joey Myers arrested Yvonna Van Dyne, 46, for domestic assault on Oct. 14.
Myers was reportedly dispatched to a residence in reference to a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival he allegedly came into contact with the victim, who stated that he and Yvonna Van Dyne had gotten into a verbal argument and she grabbed him in a headlock and punched him in the face, resulting in a busted lip and redness around his nose.
Her bond was set at $2,500, and she will appear in court on Oct. 31.
