The John Isabell Memorial Award for 2017 has been presented to Whitney Brelje, a first grade teacher at Smithville Elementary School.
The tenth annual Teacher of the Year banquet, held at the Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church Tuesday night, saw Brelje take countywide Teacher of the Year honors. Roy Nelson Pugh of Liberty State Bank, a sponsor of the banquet, along with Director of Schools Patrick Cripps and Lori Isabell, wife of John Isabell, after whom the award is named, presented the award and a check for $150 to the winner.
Brelje was one of five local educators who were chosen as Teacher of the Year at their respective schools. The other four included Jessica Hale from Northside Elementary School; Jeanna Caplinger from DeKalb West School; Jenny Elrod from DeKalb Middle School; and Todd Cantrell from DeKalb County High School.
School administrators presented all five teachers with the customary school bell. Local attorney Sarah Cripps spoke at the affair.
