A state trooper who stopped a vehicle for a light infraction ended up charging the city’s building inspector with driving under the influence on March 1.
Trooper Bobby Johnson reportedly pulled 81-year-old Eugene O'Neil, an off-duty employee of the City of Smithville, over on Golf Club Drive just before 6 p.m. because his 2003 Chevy Silverado had a brake light out and a turn signal not working.
When the trooper spoke with O'Neil, he said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol.
O'Neil allegedly admitted to drinking a beer, and Johnson found two 40-ounce bottles of King Cobra malt liquor in the truck, one unopened and the other almost empty.
Johnson said O'Neil submitted to, but performed poorly on, field sobriety tasks, and submitted to a blood test.
O'Neil was also cited for the light violations.
O'Neil was apparently off duty at the time, and was driving his personal vehicle.
His bond was set at $1,500, and he will appear in court on June 13.
