Flooding Monday afternoon saw water covering city streets and threatening to enter homes on Short Mountain Street, College Street, Meadowbrook Drive, Dearman Street and Bright Hill Road. Traffic had to be detoured around the intersection of Highway 56 and 70 because of standing water. A school bus carrying 32 students home from after-school programs was stranded in a flash flood on Dearman Street. The bus apparently slid off the road, damaging the side exit. The driver of the bus, Gayle Pack, and all the students on board escaped injury. The students were removed through the rear emergency door and loaded onto another bus to be transported home. The DeKalb County Rescue Squad assisted in the operation. Director of Schools Mark Willoughby and Transportation Director Jimmy Sprague, along with other school system personnel, members of the Smithville Police and Fire Departments and the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department were also on the scene.
