Caring and cars could be the theme this week, as Business Inc. took to the streets to find out more about both.

Having gone through some healthcare trials myself the last four weeks, I can really appreciate what the folks at NHC Smithville provide the community right here in DeKalb County.

“I’ve lived here in our community for four years and look forward to many more,” said NHC Smithville Administrator Clint Hall. “It’s a tight-knit community we have here and being the only provider in our town is a wonderful opportunity for us to meet the healthcare of our community. A lot of people think they need to go to the bigger cities but they can get the same if not better care and service here locally and be closer to their family.

“The other best part is they can have their primary care physician follow them as well, which is important for a lot of our folks. We know that you can sometimes go to the bigger hospitals and we kind of lose control because they don’t know your history or the things that are going on in your life, whereas here we are very, very blessed to have our local physicians, and they are around weekly and very involved with their patients care,” Hall said.

I can tell you from first-hand experience how wonderful it is to have NHC available locally. When you’re ill, needing rehab or have a relative in need of such care, it is even more comforting to be around folks who you know and know you. This can make all the difference in what already is one of life’s most stressful experiences one can go through.

“We are very, very blessed to serve our community and we are a CMS 5-Star rated facility with the highest customer satisfaction rating in our NHC region and we have the highest employee satisfaction rating in our region as well, so we take great pride in that,” Hall said.

“We partner with the hospitals we have a great partnership with St. Thomas DeKalb where NHC has a partnership as the two bigger entities so that is a great advantage. Cookeville Regional, Vanderbilt, all the HCA hospitals as well even Erlanger in Chattanooga. We take it as a particular interest where we want to take care of the folks in our area.”

NHC Smithville is a healthcare and rehab center that serves  folks of all ages but primarily serve a geriatric population offering in-patient and out-patient for folks that come for short-term stay which could be rehab or therapy or continuing care for those who have chronic conditions and need that extra skill and services on a long-term basis.

“More than anything there’s a lot of misconceptions about the skilled nursing services and nursing facilities in general and unfortunately there are some bad actors out there that reinforce that,” said Hall. “However, we have 24-hour RN coverage. Not every nursing facility has that but it’s a good advantage for us here to have that. So were really blessed, it’s really the quality of care is greatly improved and I feel that our community has seen that, but all the folks in our community deserve that. From the housekeepers to the CAN all the way to administration that’s our focus to meet the healthcare needs of the community.”

NHC has a 114-bed rehab center with six assisted living rooms with a staff that is trained to give just the right care when it is needed.

Glynn’s Auto Sales – 605 W. Broad Street – 615-597-4533

The winner of the recent PT Cruiser giveaway contest held by the Smithville Review might not have known where the vehicle came from; it was probably enough to win a nice daily driver to get around in and a really nice Christmas present.

The Cruiser came from Glynn’s Auto Sales and owner Glynn Merriman said there’s more where the Chrysler came from.

“We do a lot of business in used cars primarily,” Merriman said. “Most of the time the demand is for a mid-size sedan or an SUV.”

With the Christmas season in full blossom, Merriman was feeling in the holiday spirit and decided to run a Christmas special this year. He has a gorgeous 2011 blue Chevy Cruz that looks shiny as a new dollar. It has 112,000 miles and is specially priced at $5,900 for the holidays.

So if you haven’t already, stop in and check it out. If you don’t see what you want, Merriman says he is always getting in new merchandise and will help you out if there’s a certain car or truck you want to buy.
