With last week’s Business INC. being the first edition, the pressure was on to see if I could gather up enough material to keep it going.
Like a comedian, the material has to be ongoing and fresh. No one wants to hear an old joke, and I assume no one wants to read last week’s business news again, although I understand everything is new after a given amount of time has gone by. One week is just not that much time.
Going over this week’s fare, one might think I was a tailor in a previous occupation as clothes seem to be involved with several of the businesses I enlightened myself to this time around. It wasn’t intentional but that’s how it worked out.
Without further ado, here goes:
Monogramming by Sherri 102 W. Main St. soon to be 400 Public Square
With the move from the square to its new digs on Highway 56, F Z Webb and Sons Pharmacy left a vacancy downtown but not for long as Monogramming by Sherri is moving from across the street Sept. 1.
Speaking with Melissa Yarbrough about all the wonderful services they offered, I made a mental note where to go for Christmas gifts. You might think I’m being premature but trust me, it comes around fast. Seems Monogramming by Sherri makes all sorts of stuff from silkscreen T-shirts to gem-studded handbags.
“It doesn’t matter if a customer just wants one or 100,” she said. “We can do any size order and that’s not a common thing.”
I know where I might get a shirt now that says Business, INC and look official even though it’s a one-man show.
Seems I wasn’t too far off with the Christmas idea either, as the location might be starting off with its Halloween offerings, the Christmas stuff is a hop, skip and a jump away.
Monogramming by Sherri does embroidery, silk-screening, rhinestones, glass etch, banners, wall art and wedding and baby registry. For more information you can check their Facebook page at facebook.com/monogrammingbysherri.
It's currently located at 103 West Main Street in Smithville and can be reached at 615-305-6432.
Pig on the Run Barbecue 417 E. Broad St Parking Lot
Well this one isn’t about clothes, although I was looking for a new specialty shop when I spotted it. Seems the owner of Pig on the Run, Mike Riddlebarger, sets his trailer outside of the shopping center near Thrive Boutique – formerly Claire’s – every Friday and Saturday weather permitting. Besides being attracted to the smell of freshly cooked barbecue at lunch time, there was something familiar about it. Speaking with Mike I found out why as he parks his mobile dining culinary delights at the Warren County Middle School baseball field during the season. As a busy sports writer, my wife would sometimes come to games with me. She always liked going to the baseball field as Pig on the Run has the best pulled pork potatoes on the planet. I was glad to see I wouldn’t have to wean off them entirely being in DeKalb County now.
Pig on the Run also offers ribs, chicken and pulled pork sandwiches.
“I would have an on-going program that if a ballplayer got a double they got a free hot dog,” Riddlebarger said. “If they hit a home run they got a barbecue sandwich and man those boys wore me out.”
I can see that happening as they were the CTC champions last year, and obviously had a lot of pork sandwiches...something I didn’t know.
When he’s not outside in Smithville or the ballfield in McMinnville, Riddlebarger sets his trailer up at the Bear’s Creek winery in Manchester for the open concert night, which is held again on Saturday, Aug. 26, beginning at 7 p.m. It’s called Grape Jam Music Series and there’s no charge to attend. No outside alcohol or pets are allowed. Bringing a chair is recommended. The Aug. 26 show features Michael Childress.
Thrive Boutique 417 E. Broad Street
Thrive Boutique is turning over a new leaf in more ways than one. Stopping by its location on E. Broad Street, Thrive Boutique – formerly known as Claire’s – was in the process of having its sign replaced as a step towards a happy and healthy walk into the future.
Talking with owner Donna Hoff I found out she was tired.
“I’m 55 now and I wanted to slow down,” said Hoff. “I prayed about it and my daughter Stephanie Smith was helping me with a back room of products she would order and stock. She has a wonderful home, a supportive husband, friends, church and a storybook life in Charleston, SC, but was missing a purpose in her life to call her own. She wasn’t sleeping and felt bad a lot until we figured out a new plan.”
Since Smith started helping her mother, she started to find the purpose she’d been seeking.
“I feel really good now, it was just the thing to boost me up,” Smith said.
Now they’re stocking up like there’s no tomorrow. From Bath Bombs, which make your bath a lot smoother not to mention colorful to brand-name clothing you can find it all at Thrive.
Cantrell’s Clothing 115 W. Main Street
Now that we get to a shop that sells men’s clothes, I’m a little more in my depth. Well, not GQ depth, just sports-writer chic. I’m most comfortable covering a football game than attending a dinner. Who ever invented ties anyway? I pretty much stick with the clip on. Speaking of which, I can find that and more at Cantrell’s.
“We’ve got pretty much something for everyone,” said Philip “Fluty” Cantrell. “Shirts, pants, ties…a complete variety.
Now’s the time, as Fluty is kicking off another fan-favorite Gambler Sale. Seems he keeps cutting the prices down until it’s a gamble whether what you want will still be there when the big discount hits. No hiding your picks behind the ties.
The Gambler Sale is over 25 years old and held in the spring and summer. It starts at 60% off ladies spring and summer including shoes. Each week the discount increases by 5% until finale on Labor Day weekend at 75%
Well that’s all this week folks. Keep your cards and letters coming so I can chase down more business news next week.
