Gentleman’s Barber on the Square
How cool is Gentleman’s Barber? Very, if you’re a guy that likes old-fashioned men’s haircuts as that's Gentleman's Barber's forte.
Jackie Cantrell opened Gentlemen’s Barber almost 13 years ago and has been going strong ever since. He provides a service that is often missing from the mainstream these days, an appointment-free men’s haircut. Guys don’t even like to ask for directions so when it comes to a haircut, the pop-in is a favorite for the fellows.
“We cater to the male clientele, so it’s definitely an old-fashioned barbershop,” Cantrell said. “We don’t do any of the women’s services here. We’re both trained and licensed to do that but I wanted to focus on old-school, first-come first-served, no appointments necessary and it’s worked well for me. It’s been a blessing. Smithville has been good to me.”
Cantrell said word-of-mouth went rampant that he does things the tried, true and tested way.
“Every haircut gets a straight-razor neck shave and that’s something people in the beauty industry don’t do anymore,” he said. “The little detail stuff that used to be part of men’s haircuts awhile back, I’ve tried to keep that into play followed by a light neck massage with aftershave. It’s old school with a new attitude kind of thing and people seem to eat it up.”
Cantrell said he saw an opportunity as there wasn’t just a men’s place in town and hadn’t been for a number of years.
“Women had taken over this industry here so they had the beauty barber shop but that required an appointment and it was just a whole different atmosphere for the men. They had to go where their wives went for a haircut and make an appointment and us guys hate that. Even now when a lady comes in with her son, the guys are like ‘what’s she doing in here?’”
If you do walk in while someone’s getting a haircut and have to wait a few moments, you won’t be bored. Cantrell has a collection of old-timey barbershop memorabilia that will knock your socks off.
“The collection is what I’m really proud of. I started with these two shadow boxes on the wall - just pieces I had of old memorabilia and the guys saw I had an interest in that and the next thing I knew they were bringing me things that had been their granddad’s or their uncles. It’s really my customers’ collection. I didn’t collect it, they did which makes it mean more to me, of course, because of that it’s kind of cool.”
Cantrell got so busy he hired another barber, Ken Winfree, to keep up. So next time you start to look a little shaggy stop by and get some off the top, you won’t be sorry.
