A Smithville man was flown by an air ambulance to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville Wednesday morning after a roll over crash on Keltonburg Road.

Trooper Jason Cobble told the Smithville Review that Gary Cantrell, driving a 1993 Jeep Wrangler, was traveling east on Keltonburg Road near the intersection with Jefferson Road, when he failed to negotiate a left-hand curve, causing the vehicle to travel off the right side of the road where he lost control. The vehicle re-entered the roadway, overturned and rolled off the left side, where it came to rest on its top.

Trapped underneath the vehicle, Cantrell was assisted by passersby, including Smithville Police Chief Mark Collins and a DeKalb County Volunteer Firefighter. He was able to crawl from the wreckage.

He was treated by DeKalb EMS until air medical arrived.

Members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department were also on the scene.
