After a two-day crime spree which included multiple burglaries, theft and vandalism, William Andrew “Andy” Cantrell, 44, of Redmon Road, Smithville, was arrested by officers of the DeKalb County Sheriff on Nov. 12. He has a total bond of $70,000 and is to appear in court Nov. 29.
Cantrell’s crime spree started on Nov. 11 when he allegedly entered an out-building on Big Woods Road by going through a window. While inside, he took a four-wheeler and busted through the doors. He then gained entrance to the home by prying open the back door. He allegedly took a H&R .22 caliber target pistol without the owner’s consent. In this case, he was charged with burglary, aggravated burglary and theft of property over $500.
At another residence on Big Woods Road the same day, Cantrell was charged with two counts of burglary and two counts of vandalism involving two victims.
Sheriff Patrick Ray reported that Cantrell entered a vehicle without the owner’s consent. While inside he tried to steal the radio, causing $500 damage to the dash. Also while inside the vehicle, he tried to steal the vehicle, causing approximately $1,000 damage to the steering column, the area around the ignition switch and glove box.
Cantrell then broke in to the Old Fashion Freewill Baptist Church, located on Blue Springs Road, by going through a back door. Once inside the church, he took a laptop computer, two wireless keyboards, a projector and a black bag. The total value of the items was estimated at a value of $2,200. In this case, Cantrell was charged with one count of burglary and one count of theft of property over $1,000.
Cantrell admitted to committing all of the crimes.
After being arrested and being charged with a total of nine charges, Cantrell was then charged with introduction or possession of drugs into a penal system after be searched by a correctional officer during booking. Found was a small red plastic container containing a white substance believed to be methamphetamine.
Brett Allen Anderson, 44, of King Ridge Road was arrested on Nov. 14 and charged with vandalism. According to the sheriff, a deputy responded on Nov. 13 to a call about a male who had vandalized property. Upon arriving at the location, the deputy did see damage to the front door, spoke with the alleged male who admitted to kicking the door in and entering the residence. Anderson’s bond was set at $1,000 and he will appear in court Dec. 13.
Twenty-year-old Christopher Thomas Pack, of Adams Street, was charged with under-age driving while impaired on Nov. 14 after a deputy responded to a one-vehicle accident on Big Rock Road.
When the deputy arrived, he found Pack to be the driver of the vehicle. He also noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Pack and that he was acting very nervous. Pack was asked if he had been drinking prior to the accident, and he told the office he had been drinking beer.
Pack performed several sobriety tasks, which he did poorly on. He also submitted to a blood alcohol test. In addition to the above charge, Pack was written citations for maintaining a lane of travel, exercise due care and under-age consumption. His bond was set at $1,500, and he will appear in court Dec. 13.
James Robert Whitacker III, 22, was arrested on Nov. 16 and charged with domestic assault after deputies responded to a 911 call from a Tammy Kay Road residence. When the deputies arrived they found that Whitacker and his father had been arguing about the keys to the car. After speaking with everyone involved, it was determined that Whitacker was the aggressor. During the argument Whitacker wanted the keys, but the father told him no. At that time, Whitacker responded he would get the keys one way or the other and allegedly grabbed his father by the ankle, twisting his foot, causing him to lose his balance and fall. Whitacker admitted to the officer that he did this. His bond was set at $2,500 and he is to appear in court Dec. 16.
Cesario Gaspar Cortez, 26, of East Main Street, Smithville, was charged with domestic assault on Nov. 18. According to reports, Cortez came home drunk on Oct. 7 and assaulted his wife by hitting her in the eye with a chopping block and scratching her face with a key. He then put her in a vehicle and carried her to the Cookeville Regional ER for medical treatment. His bond was set at $2,500, and he is to appear in court Nov. 29. ICE, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also has a hold on Cortez.
Cindy Armstrong Sherrell Lemons, 32, of Potts Camp Road, Smithville, was charged for simple possession of a Schedule III drug (Hydrocodone) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia on Nov. 18 after being arrested on a state’s warrant of violation of probation.
After Lemons was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy, the deputy found two hypodermic needles, wrapped in a plastic bag and covered in tissue, in the driver’s seat where she had been sitting.
While being transported to the jail, Lemons, whose hands were cuffed behind her back, pulled a plastic bag from the back inside of her pants, dumped out blue-colored pills and began trying to eat all of them. The deputy did stop her before she consumed the all. Her bond was set at $4,000 and she is to appear in court for these charges on Nov. 29.
Thirty-seven-year-old Desiree Nichole Ferrell of Fiddler’s Lane, Smithville, was arrested on Nov. 19 and charged with fraudulent use of a debit card and forgery. The charges stem from an investigation done by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department criminal detective.
On Oct. 15, Ferrell took a debit card without the owner’s knowledge or consent. She withdrew $319.90 from a debit machine with the card. On Oct. 19 she passed a forged check on a victim’s checking account at Regions Bank, cashing a $70 check at a local grocery store. Ferrell did admit to committing the crimes. Her bond was set at $4,000, and she is to appear in court Nov. 29.
