A Baxter man was killed Thursday afternoon when his pickup ran off Highway 96 and hit a tree near the Putnam County line.

Fatally injured was Morris Dewayne Carr, 56, of Baxter. He was the sole occupant of his GMC Canyon which was traveling on Medley-Amonette Road.

According to Highway Patrol Trooper Danielle Neal, the wreck happened as Carr was northbound on Highway 96. The investigation showed the truck ran off the road and traveled about 100 yards before flipping onto its side and coming to rest against a tree. The driver, who was partially ejected from the overturned vehicle, was pinned between the truck and the tree. He was not wearing a seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hooper-Huddleson-Horner Baxter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He was laid to rest Monday. He leaves behind a son, daughter and three grandchildren.
