Hundreds of people came out in support of the Christmas on the Square event in downtown Smithville Thursday evening.
The Community Chorus, led by Ms. Faye Fuqua, serenaded the crowd with a nice variety of lively and serene Christmas carols. WSMV TV Channel 4's Snowbird joined in to help Ms. Faye in leading the choir, adding his own special blend of dance moves.
During the flag ceremony, Boy Scout Troop #347 led the pledge followed by the National Anthem sung by Suzanne Slager. As the Community Chorus sang Silent Night, the Boy Scouts lit candles held by the attendees.
After the countdown for the tree lighting, the Community Chorus sang the lively "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" song. County Officials and staff were on hand at the Courthouse Open House to hand out sweet treats and popcorn.
The free photo booth, sponsored by the City of Smithville, was a popular place to be. People stood in line to dress up in big glasses, hats, and scarves for their chance to get their fun snapshots made by Cosmos Creations.
KICKS 106.9 set up to broadcast the event live from the courthouse. The Justin Potter Library was brimming with children as they listened to a story read by Snowbird. Afterward, the children visited with Santa to make sure that he knew their Christmas wish list. Many people took this opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done at the downtown stores' special sales.
Chamber Director Suzanne Williams said, “Downtown Smithville looks like a Norman Rockwell picture during Christmas on the Square. I hope this tradition continues, and we hope to see this event grow more and more every year. We appreciate everyone who came out and supported our annual Christmas on the Square event.”
Christmas on the Square fun for all ages
