Smithville man arrested after attacking DeKalb County deputies with knives
Jeremy Austin Scruggs, 39, of Smithville was arrested Monday, Aug. 28, for aggravated assault, and resisting arrest after brandishing two knives and charging towards deputies.
DeKalb County Sheriff’s department deputies were dispatched to Highland Avenue for a man with a knife. Upon arrival, the deputies made contact with Scruggs in an outbuilding and found he had two knives, one in each hand. He was given verbal commands multiple times to drop the knives, but he started to charge at officers. A Taser had to be used to stop him and he had to be forcibly restrained. He is being held on $8,500 bond with a court date of Sept. 14.
Smithville man arrested for assaulting own mother
Michael Joseph Lee, 27, of Smithville is charged with domestic assault. His bond is $5,000 and his court date is Sept. 14. Sheriff Patrick Ray stated on Monday, August 28, Lee allegedly assaulted his mother by kicking her in the face and chest causing red marks. It was determined that Lee was the primary aggressor.
Pierce arrested for sale of methamphetamine
In a sealed indictment issued May 30, 42-year-old Stephanie Ann Pierce of Elmwood was charged with one count of sale and delivery of a Schedule II drug (methamphetamine) and also violation of the drug- free zone. She is held on a $50,000 bond with a court date of Sept 11.
DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department arrests local man for trailer theft
Bruce Randall Bumbalough, 52, of Sparta is charged with theft of property over $1,000.
The sheriff’s department received a report that someone had stolen a 6 x 12 foot utility trailer, valued at $1,200, from a residence on Big Hurricane Road without consent.
A detective was assigned to the case and developed Bumbalough as a suspect. He was arrested Aug. 29 for the crime.
His bond is $10,000 and his court date is Sept. 14.
Fish DUI results in two arrests
Kanday Kay Fish, 52, of Dowelltown is charged with driving under the influence.
On Monday, Aug. 28, deputies received a call from central dispatch to be on the lookout for a reckless driver. A deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description while traveling south on Anthony Avenue. After observing the vehicle travel into the oncoming lane of traffic, the officer made the stop and spoke with the driver, Fish. According to the deputy, Fish could barely keep her eyes open. Her speech was slurred and she was very unsteady on her feet. After submitting to and performing poorly on field sobriety tests given, she was placed under arrest for DUI. She was also cited for failure to maintain lane of travel. Her bond is $1,500.
Jason Bradley Cripps, 43, is charged with driving under the influence and a second offense of driving on a revoked license after he drove to the jail to pick up Kanday Fish.
On Monday, Aug. 28, a deputy was notified by corrections officers that a subject had driven to the jail without a license. Upon arrival the deputy spoke with a man, Cripps, who was sitting in the passenger seat of a white car.
The officer had prior knowledge of Cripps’ revoked license from earlier dealings and reviewed video from a surveillance camera which showed that Cripps driving up to the jail and parking. He then exited the car on the driver side and then re-entered the vehicle on the passenger side.
Cripps’ eyes were glassy and bloodshot with pinpoint pupils. His speech was slow and slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. Cripps submitted to but performed poorly on field sobriety tests. He was then placed under arrest. Cripps’ license was revoked in 2006 for failure to file a property damage accident report. His bond is $4,500 and his court date is Sept. 14.
Liberty man charged with resisting arrest
James Cary Hicks, Jr., 38, of Liberty is charged with resisting stop, frisk, halt, search, or arrest. On Friday, Sept. 1, a deputy went to Hicks’ residence to serve a warrants on him. Upon the officer’s arrival, Hicks ran out of a side door. The deputy clearly identified himself and gave repeated commands for Hicks to stop but he refused. Hicks was later arrested.
Pair arrested at Pate’s Ford for public intoxication
Dustin Lee Mason, 35, of Greenbrier is charged with public intoxication. On Monday, Sept. 4, a deputy was called to Pates Ford Marina due to someone causing problems there. Upon arrival the officer spoke with Mason who had a very strong odor of alcohol on his person.
His speech was slurred, his eyes were glassy and he was very combative. Mason was told to stay at his campsite but returned to the marina before the deputy left. Mason was possibly a danger to himself as well as an annoyance to others in the vicinity. Mason was placed under arrest. His bond is $1,500 and his court date is Sept. 14.
Brittany Nicole Kane, 30, of Ashland City is charged with public intoxication. On Monday, Sept. 4, a deputy was called to Pates Ford Marina due a subject causing problems. Upon arrival the officer spoke with the woman. Kane who had a very strong odor of alcohol on her person, her speech was slurred, her eyes were glassy and she was very combative. Kane did pose a danger to herself and an annoyance to those in the vicinity. Kane was then placed under arrest. Her bond is $1,500 and her court date is Sept. 14.
