Voters in the City of Smithville will have another opportunity to choose whether restaurants inside the city limits should be able to serve liquor by the drink during the November election.
Administrator of Elections Dennis Stanley said local businessman Randy Paris has submitted a petition to the election commission office that has the required number of valid signatures to get the referendum on the ballot in conjunction with the Tennessee General and US Presidential Election on Nov. 8.
The referendum asks voters to cast ballots "For the legal sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises in Smithville" or "Against the legal sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises in Smithville"
Similar referendums have been voted on twice in the city, and have failed by narrow margins.
A 2014 effort to legalize liquor in restaurants failed in a 412-397 vote, while a vote to allow package liquor stores passed by a vote of 406-401. A 2012 referendum failed on a 402-333 vote.
