The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said a 33-year-old Clarksville man who led police on a chase from Smithville to White County Thursday was killed in an officer involved shooting after crashing his vehicle.
The man, Michael Zennie Dial II from Clarksville, initially fled from officers in the City of Smithville when they attempted to perform a traffic stop. The chase reportedly began at about 4:30 p.m., when Dial, driving a pickup with a loaded trailer behind, refused to stop for Smithville police.
He allegedly fled from city officers at speeds of up to 75 MPH, and was pursued by four units from the local department to about a mile across the White County line, where the pursuit was terminated. A DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy reportedly ended his pursuit at the county line.
The Chase was soon taken up by White County officers, who trailed the truck when it turned north on Highway 111 in Sparta. Dial reportedly crashed into several of the White County patrol cars, and at some point the tires of the trailer appeared to have flattened, dumping some of the items from the trailer into the median.
As the Dial continued down the 111, a White County deputy and a Sparta Police officer fired shots toward the truck, which veered off the highway, traveled down an embankment, and lodged in the tree line. Dial apparently died from his injuries.
Three White County officers, one from Sparta Police Department two from the county sheriff’s office, were injured consistent in vehicle crashes, and were transported to the hospital. All three have since been released.
TBI Special Agents are continuing to investigate and interview witnesses, and the case remains active and ongoing. At the conclusion of the investigation, the investigative case file will be turned over to the District Attorney General for his office’s review.
