Class of 2016 receives more than $1m in scholarships

DCHS seniors received more than a million dollars in scholarships at the annual Senior Awards Monday evening.

 

Salutatorian Max Pafford and Valedictorian Ashli Chew took in the two largest total scholarship hauls for the class of 2016. Pafford took home a total of $133,900 in scholarships, including a $103,800 endowment from the University of Alabama, $24,000 from the University of Memphis, a $4,000 General Assembly Merit Scholarship, the Jolly Angels/Brandon Elder Memorial Scholarship ($2,000), and a Smithville Rotary Club Math award ($100). He was also named an Advance Placement (AP) Scholar, was named to the Tennessee Governor’s School for International Studies, and received the DCHS Honors English IV Award and the Woodmen of the World Award.

 

Chew was awarded a $31,440 per year scholarship from Bryan College for a four-year total $125,760, the Provost Scholarship from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga ($12,000). Chew was also named to the National Society of High School Scholars.

 

Hayden Plymel, who will graduate high school with the class of 2016 Friday night, was recognized for having already earned an associate’s degree from Motlow State Community College through the dual enrollment program.
