Book Signing at Justin Potter Library

Author Larry Self will have a book signing at Justin Potter Library on Thursday, Feb. 8 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. He has written two children’s books entitled “Mary a Mermaid in Reverse, Book 1 and 2. 
Larry Self was born at home in 1944, near Smithville, Tennessee. He attended school in DeKalb County and later pastored churches there as well. He moved his family to Putnam County in 1973 to pastor a church.  In 1976 Larry, his wife Betty and Mr. U.L. Whitson founded the Cookeville Rescue Mission.  He was the Executive Director of the mission for 38 years and spent 41 years there as Pastor of Marsh Chapel.  Larry and his family currently attend People’s Baptist Church located in Alexandria, Tennessee.
Larry is excited to announce and to invite all his old and new friends to Justin Potter Library in Smithville where he will be signing copies of his books. The books will be available to purchase for $6 and book 1 includes a bonus music CD containing the classic Eddie Raven song “The God for Kids”.

Ugandan children to perform at Smithville First Baptist Church Feb. 6

Children from Uganda bring a vibrant and joyful performance to Smithville First Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 6. The community is invited is invited to hear the Sozo Children’s Choir as they sing traditional African songs, children’s church songs and the contemporary music from worship bands like Chris Tomlin, Hillsong United, and Elevation Worship. The concert is free, starting at 6:30 p. m. February 6 at Smithville First Baptist Church, 101 West Church Street. A love offering will be taken up following the concert.

Free Community-Based Education

The evidence-based Nurturing Parenting Program builds protective factors in families that, when present, increase the health and well-being of children and families. A workshop will be held in DeKalb County to help families learn about the philosophy and practices of Nurturing Parenting. The classes are also offered in Cannon, Clay Cumberland, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Smith, Van Buren, Warren and White Counties. There are free classes held at the DeKalb County Complex, Room 119 Monday – Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Registration is Monday 3:30 – 7 p.m. and Tuesday 9 a.m. to noon. DeKalb Animal Coalition

The DeKalb Animal Coalition meets monthly on the first Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the former Senior Citizens room on the second floor of city hall. The shelter is now open and running well.  Everyone is welcome to attend and learn more about the shelter and how one can help.”
Smithville Head Start Center

L.B.J. & C. Head Start is currently accepting applications to provide free comprehensive child development services to children three- five years of age from low-income families in a full-day program. Services are also offered to meet the special needs of children with disabilities. L.B.J. & C. Head Start helps all children succeed. L.B.J. & C. Head Start provides children with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically.

The L.B.J. & C. Head Start recognizes that, as parents, you are the first and most important teachers of your children. They will welcome your involvement in L.B.J. & C. Head Start activities and will work as partners with you to help your child and family progress. Children who attend L.B.J. & C. Head Start participate in a variety of educational activities, receive free medical and dental care, for healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy playing indoors and outdoors in a safe environment. DeKalb County Canning College Course

The course is $25, which covers food and supplies. Same course is offered during day and night to accommodate participants’ schedules. Payment is due at least three days prior to class. The class will be held at the UT Extension Office, 722 South Congress Boulevard, Smithville. A minimum of four students are needed to make each class.
