Conger appointed to city judge seat

Hilton Conger was appointed to another two-year term as Smithville Municipal Judge Monday night. The city council voted unanimously that Conger remain city judge. City Attorney Vester Parsley, Jr. administered the oath of office to Conger.

 

While the city judges seat was once an elected office with a term of eight years, the position has been filled by appointment by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen since 2006, and the term was reduced to two years. Conger was elected as City Judge in 1998, and was appointed in 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012.

 

The city judge hears traffic offenses and city ordinance violations, and the court convenes once per month. The salary for the job is $1,000 per month.

 

Conger's term expires August 31, 2016.

 

Mayor Jimmy Poss also made the appointments to city boards and commissions at Monday’s regular meeting, and the choices were approved by the aldermen.

 

Glen Nichols was appointed to 6-year term on the Smithville Planning Commission, and to a 3-year-term on the Board of Zoning Appeals. Janie Knowleswas alson named for a 3-year term on the Board of Zoning Appeals.

 

Wayne Hubbs was appointed to the Smithville Airport Advisory Board, and Beecher Taylor to a 6-year term on the Smithville Planning Commission.

 

The mayor also appointed the aldermen as commissioners over city departments. Shawn Jacobs was named water and sewer commissioner, Gayla Hendrix to sanitation and Jason Murphy was appointed police and fire commissioner.

 

Josh Miller was named commissioner of streets and safety and Danny Washer will oversee finance and taxation.

 

Mayor Poss named Jacobs Vice Mayor as well, and the aldermen approved the action.

 

At the recommendation of Fire Chief Charlie Parker, the aldermen approved the addition of three new volunteer firefighters to the department. Parker told the council that Cody Fults, Bradley Johnson, and Dalton Roberts have all met the requirements to become members, including successfully completing their 90-day probationary period.
