A local couple face theft charges after they repeatedly looted a property on Old Snow Hill Road, according to Sheriff Patrick Ray.
Brandon Lynn Tallent, 28, and 20-year-old Shelly Renae Newby have both been charged with theft of property under $500 and two counts of theft of property over $1,000.
Ray said that Tallent and Newby took three tractor-trailer starters and a cast iron intake valued at more than $1,000 from property on Old Snow Hill Road on Jan. 16.
Newby allegedly admitted to a deputy that she and Tallent had taken items from this property on several occasions.
The pair allegedly then took two trailers and small gasoline engines, again valued at more than $1,000, from the same property on Jan. 20.
Newby reportedly again admitted to authorities that she and Tallent had taken the items.
Then, on Jan. 25, the two allegedly went back to the location and took valve covers, a gas tank, an intake, and struts with a value of less than $500.
The items from the last theft were allegedly found in the back of Tallent's vehicle after he was pulled over for a traffic stop.
Newby allegedly admitted again that she and Tallent had taken the items.
Bond for each totals $21,500 and they will appear in court on Feb. 14.
Meanwhile, a 43-year-old man was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon inside a penal institution after allegedly being found with a hand-made weapon in the jail on Jan. 23.
Morris Edward Knowles, an inmate at the DeKalb County Jail, was charged after he was reportedly found with a weapon made from a razor handle and a nail.
According to Ray, the device could have been easily used to stab or cut someone.
The weapon was allegedly found inside Knowles' sock while he was being searched before a shakedown.
His bond was set at $5,000, and he will appear in court on Jan. 31.
A Manchester man was arrested for allegedly stealing a truck from a local car lot on Jan. 17.
Ray said 35-year-old Brady Gordon Cunningham was charged with theft of property over $10,000.
Cunningham allegedly took a black 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck valued at $11,500 from Jason's Auto Sales on Nashville Highway.
Cunningham’s bond was set at $18,500 and he will appear in court on Jan. 31.
Joshua Kevin Vickers, 30, was charged with burglary and theft of property over $1,000 on January 11.
Ray said Vickers broke into an outbuilding on Green Hill Road in Liberty by kicking in the front door on Oct. 12.
He allegedly took a chainsaw, leaf blower, a cordless screwdriver set, battery charger and various other items, including a 1997 Honda four-wheeler, with a total value of more than $1,000.
Vickers’ bond totals $10,000, and he will be in court on Jan. 31.
Joshua Samuel Garrett, 21, was charged with domestic assault on Jan. 18.
Ray said a deputy who responded to DeKalb County High School to investigate a complaint of a domestic assault spoke to a 17-year-old girl who had a busted lip and bruising on her right hand and arm.
The girl allegedly said that her brother, Joshua, had assaulted her because she did not feel good and had nothing to wear to school.
The deputy reportedly went to Garrett's home, spoke to him, and determined that he was the primary aggressor.
Garrett’s bond was set at $3,000, and he will appear in court on Feb. 7.
John Michael Turner, 44, was charged with a second offense of driving under the influence and disorderly conduct on Jan. 23.
He was also cited for violation of the financial responsibility law (no insurance).
Ray said that the sheriff's office received a call that someone had been blowing their car horn for some time on A.B. Frazier Road, and a deputy dispatched to investigate found Turner's vehicle in a ditch.
Turner was present and his keys were allegedly in the ignition.
Ray said Turner had an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person and was unsteady on his feet.
Turner reportedly refused to submit to a field sobriety task because he was too unsteady.
Ray said that Turner submitted to a blood test, but began swearing and became very loud and disorderly at the hospital, refusing to do what the officer asked him to do.
He also allegedly made threatening gestures toward hospital personnel.
Turner was declared an habitual offender on Dec. 5, 1996 in DeKalb County.
His bond totals $7,500 and he will be in court on Feb. 14.
