A 20-year-old local man was airlifted after a one-vehicle rollover on Jacobs Pillar Road early Tuesday morning. According to Sergeant Eric McCormick of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, James Matthew Crowe was traveling south in a 1993 Mazda when he veered off the right right side of the road, struck a drainage ditch, and overturned, coming to rest on its top. Central dispatch was notified of the accident just outside the Smithville city limits at 12:51 a.m. Crowe was taken by DeKalb EMS to meet a Life Force helicopter, which transported him to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. Members of the Short Mountain Highway Station and the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Truck removed Crowe from the wrecked vehicle, while The Keltonburg Station helped set up a helicopter landing zone. Officers of the Sheriff's Department also assisted at the scene.
