The DeKalb County Democratic Party Mass Meeting Saturday saw several more candidates throw their hats into the ring to run for office this year.
Tim Stribling, currently a Smithville alderman, announced his intention to seek the office of county mayor in the May 6 Democratic primary.
Incumbent Mike Foster, also a Democrat, has not yet indicated whether he will seek his fourth term in the seat.
James L "Jimmy" Poss will face incumbent County Clerk Mike Clayborn in the primary. Clayborn will run for his fourth term in the office.
Incumbent General Sessions Judge Bratten (Butch) Cook, II will seek his third term in the seat. Margie Rigsby Miller announced her intention to challenge him in the primary.
Jimmy Sprague and Shane Walker declared that they will both vie for the nomination to the office of road supervisor.
Incumbent Register of Deeds Jeff McMillen announced plans to seek his eighth term in the office.
Circuit Court Clerk Katherine Pack, a three-term incumbent, will seek another term in the office.
Michael Agee will run for the office of sheriff on the Democratic ticket.
Jerry Hutchins, Jr. and Clarence Trapp are in the running for Second District county commission seats.
Incumbents Jerry Scott and Bradley Hendrix will face former Second District commissioner Jack Barton in the race for Third District county commissioner.
Barton recently resigned his Second District seat after moving his residence to the Third District.
Incumbent David McDowell will run again for Fourth District commissioner.
Incumbent Rick Cantrell and Anita Puckett will seek Fifth District commissioner’s seats.
Betty Atnip will seek the nomination for commissioner in the Sixth District
Incumbent Larry Summers and Kevin Robinson will seek Seventh District commissioner’s seats.
Some democratic candidates have picked up petitions to qualify for office, but apparently did not attend the mass meeting include:
•Kenneth Clayborn - county commissioner in the First District.
•Elmer Ellis, Jr. (Incumbent) - county commissioner in the First District.
•Bennett Armstrong - county commissioner in the First District
•Bobby Taylor - county commissioner in the Fourth District
•Wayne Cantrell (Incumbent) - county commissioner in the Fourth District.
•Jeff Barnes (Incumbent) - county commissioner in the Sixth District.
•Marshall Ferrell (Incumbent) - county commissioner in the Sixth District.
Each of the seven districts have two commissioner’s seats.
It was also announced that Benjamin Chad Curtis will seek the office of constable in the First District.
Some candidates for the Democratic nomination in the seven 13th Judicial District races announced their intention to seek office at the mass meeting, including:
•William F. Roberson of Putnam County - Criminal Court Judge, Part I.
•Anthony Craighead of Putnam County - District Attorney General.
•David N. Brady (Incumbent) of Putnam County - District Public Defender.
•Amy Hollars of Overton County (Incumbent) for Circuit Court Judge, Part I.
•Randall York of Cumberland County - Circuit Court Judge, Part II
Criminal Court Judge Leon Burns, Jr. announced Ronald Thurman’s intention to seek the office of Chancellor of the 13th Judicial District, an office he has held since 2006.
Amos Powers of Cookeville announced that he will seek the nomination for U.S. Representative in the 6th Congressional District, of which DeKalb County is a part.
The deadline to qualify for the May 6 primary is noon on Feb. 20.
Current Smithville Mayor Jimmy Poss announced that he would seek the non-partisan seat again in the August general election, and former alderman Gayla Hendrix, shared that she would be run for alderman again this fall.
State Representative Gloria Johnson of Knoxville was the guest speaker at the event.
