A Dowelltown man was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga after a one-car crash near Smithville Municipal Golf Course Saturday evening.A 2005 Pontiac Sunfire driven by 40-year-old Phillip Carroll was broken completely in half after the vehicle crashed into a tree on Holmes Creek Road just after 6 p.m.Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol told the Review that Carroll was traveling north in when he crossed the center line, overcorrected and ran off the right side of the roadway.Carroll was ejected from the vehicle upon contact with a tree.A small fire inside the severed front half of the Pontiac was extinguished by the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department.DeKalb EMS transported Carroll to the Smithville Municipal Airport, where he was picked up and flown to Erlanger Hospital.Carroll's injuries are not yet known, but he was conscious and able to speak when city police arrived at the scene.Trooper Johnson said the cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
