DeKalb Countians gathered at the community complex to remember those who have fallen in service to our country Monday.
DeKalb County Historian Tommy Webb served as speaker for the event, sponsored by the American Legion Post #122 and moderated by Commander William Edmonds. The program featured the presentation of the flags by members of Boy Scout Troop #347, a prayer by Minister Larry Green, and a performance of the National Anthem by Erica Birmingham. Susan Hinton performed “Til They Come Home.”
Judy Redmon of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary recognized Gold Star Mothers and then asked for a moment of silence for the men and women who have died in the service of their country.
Webb shared the story of the Burnace Hill of Dowelltown, a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II. Hill was held in Japan for the entire war, being taken prisoner in the Philippines just after Pearl Harbor was bombed, and not released until the surrender of Japan in 1945.
Ronnie Redmon, Post Adjutant of the American Legion Post #122, adjourned the program at the complex and participants made their way to the courthouse, where a wreath was laid at the veteran’s memorial monument, and DCHS band member Josh Moon played Taps.
