Four units in the housing projects on Circle Drive in Dowelltown were destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon. A cooking fire reportedly started the blaze, which spread quickly through the attic of the building. All the residents escaped unharmed, but most of their possessions were destroyed by flames and water damage. According to County Fire Chief Donny Green, a resident was cooking when some grease caught fire. The fire spread up the back of the stove and into the attic, which was shared with the other three units in the building. Green said all four units were total losses. The Red Cross and management at the facility helped provide shelter and necessities for the victims. Members of the Liberty Station, Main Station, Cookeville Highway Station, and Belk Station responded to the scene, the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department was called to provide extra manpower under a mutual aid agreement. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and DeKalb EMS were also assisted at the scene.
