Fire ravages downtown Woodbury

Downtown Woodbury was ravaged by fire Friday night. Cannon County officials said the fire was reported just after 5:30 p.m. While officials suspect that the blaze, which heavily damaged a block of buildings on the town square, may have been sparked by an electrical problem on the second floor of one of the businesses, the cause remains under investigation by the state fire marshal. No injuries were reported. The fire was mostly contained to two buildings, which housed Always Buying Gold and Faith and Hope Consignment, but neighboring businesses received smoke and water damage. The flames rapidly spread to a storage shed behind the buildings, completely destroying it. Several departments from surrounding cities were called in to assist, and firefighters battled the conflagration for more than five hours. Most of the merchandise from The Bean Pot, an antique store in the block of damaged structures, was saved by locals who helped empty the items from the store into a trailer supplied by local trucking firm Huff and Puff Trucking.A firewall saved a neighboring dance studio that is currently under construction. The Friday night blaze marks the second time in as many years that fire has gutted a business on the Woodbury square. The 2011 fire started inside the J.P.'s Fine Swine BBQ restaurant on the town square.
