The sale of fireworks may soon be legal in the City of Smithville. During Monday night’s meeting, the mayor and aldermen discussed a possible ordinance allowing fireworks to be sold in city limits. Shooting fireworks is already legal with the exclusion of within the business district, which is state regulated. The ban from 1982 may be lifted at the April meeting.

"Everyone knows the county allows fireworks to be sold," state Hunter Hendrixson "and you can go just a few feet outside of city limits and they’re selling.

"The most we would capture is about $5,000 in July and $1,000 around the New Year. We would probably catch the sales tax off of that. I think it would good for the city to capture those permit revenues," Hendrixson added.

Also during the meeting, City Administrator Hunter Hendrixson gave an update on property tax revenue collections.

"Property tax collected through Feb. 28 is roughly $800 thousand," reported Hendrixson. "Last year we collected $777 thousand. We’re at roughly 92 percent, so everything is going good.

The city’s property tax rate is 64.9 cents per one-hundred dollars accessed value. Property tax is to generate $820,000 for the fiscal year ending June 2017.

City Firefighters and volunteers were also approved during Monday night’s meeting. They include Chief Charlie Parker, Deputy Chief Hoyte Hale, Captain Jeff Wright, Lieutenants Danny Poss, John Poss, Donnie Cantrell and Kevin Adcock, Firefighters William "Wink" Brown, Wallace Colwell (Chaplain), Gary Johnson, James R. Randal Hunt, Stephanie Wright, Glen Lattimore, Cory Killian, Greg Bess, Becky Atnip, Shawn Jacobs (auxiliary member), Bradley Johnson, Dalton Roberts, CJ Tramel, Robin Summers, Kim Johnson, Seth Wright, Garrett Johnson, and Rookie Ryan Herron.
