Floating Mill and Hurricane Marina offered fun in the sun for free Saturday during National Get Outdoors Day.

“We were encouraging everyone to get outside, to be active and healthy and to enjoy all the great stuff we have here at Center Hill Lake,” said Park Ranger Sarah Peace of the event that drew scores of guests.

Peace pointed out the numerous activities that were available for visitors, all at no charge. “Normally it’s $5 per car to get in but today it was totally free,” she noted. “There a beach and swimming, a walking trail, games and activities from the Forestry Service and Corps of Engineers.”

The event also featured an amateur canoe race, with several competitors trying to navigate their boats across Floating Mill and back. For those who didn’t want to captain their own ship, free pontoon board rides ferried guests from Floating Mill to Hurricane Marina and back.

While this year’s event is over, Peace said there is always another chance. “If you missed out you can come next year,” she said. “It’s always the second Saturday in June.”
