Fuel spill shuts Mapco down
mapco w L

Business at Mapco Express on Highway 70 was brought to a halt Sunday because of a fuel spill. According to Store Manager Bucky Suddard, a hose from a tanker truck delivering fuel broke free and spilled around 100 gallons of fuel into the parking lot of the business. The Smithville Volunteer Fire Department and a HEPACO spill control team worked for several hours to remove the fuel and prevent it from reaching a nearby creek. The spill occurred just before 10:30 a.m., and the parking lot was closed to customers until the spill was declared eradicated around 5 p.m.
