A local man became the third traffic fatality in DeKalb County this year after he lost his life in a crash on Short Mountain Highway last week.Dead is Haskel Junior Hawkins, 69.According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Hawkins was traveling south on Highway 146 Thursday afternoon when his 2002 Buick Century exited the roadway on the left side of the highway near Short Mountain Mini-Storage.The vehicle reportedly entered a ditchline, struck a culvert and rolled, ending up on its side in a soybean field.Hawkins was ejected from the car.Authorities said he was not wearing a seatbelt.He was transported to DeKalb Community Hospital by DeKalb EMS, where he was pronounced dead.Hawkins was a co-owner of Hawkins and Cook Construction Company and affiliated with Covenant Baptist Church.Services were held July 20 at the chapel of Love Cantrell Funeral Home.He was preceded in death by his first wife Judy Russell Hawkins; parents William Haskel Hawkins and Bonnie Barnes Turner; and a son Shane Hawkins.Survivors include a daughter Jan (Allen) Wilkins of Smithville; a son Ricky Hawkins of Sparta; his wife Ann Hawkins of Smithville; three grandchildren Josh Hawkins and Jordan Wilkins of Smithville and Brandon Hawkins of Sparta; two great-grandchildren Alixs and Hunter Hawkins; and a sister Dorothy (Ryan) Masters of Smithville.Serving as pallbearers Josh and Brandon Hawkins, Jordan Wilkins, Charles Cantrell, Mike Turner, Kenneth Moore, Allen Wilkins and Paul Blair.
