A White County man who was involved in a hit and run accident that resulted in a fatality last Sept. 15 was indicted last week by the DeKalb County Grand Jury on charges of vehicular homicide.
Indictments were handed down against 51-year-old Donald Ray Henson for vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident.
The incident resulted in the death of 44-year-old Priscilla Judkins, who succumbed to injuries she suffered in the collision at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Henson was traveling east on Broad Street in Smithville at the wheel of a Dodge Caravan at just after 9 a.m. when he allegedly rear-ended Randy Paris’ 1994 Toyota pickup truck.
Paris was reportedly stopped at the  intersection of Broad and South Mountain Street when the van crashed into him, knocking the little Toyota 30-40 feet. The truck eventually came to rest on the sidewalk near the College Street underpass.
While Paris’ vehicle suffered extensive damage, he was not seriously injured.
Henson allegedly sped away from the scene after colliding  Paris’ truck, still heading east on Highway 70.
He then reportedly nearly struck Sheriff Patrick Ray  just past the intersection of Congress Boulevard.
According to Ray, he was in the west-bound turning lane on Highway 70 near Bumper's Drive-In when Henson’s eastbound Dodge Caravan, approached his cruiser at a high rate of speed.
Ray said he had to maneuver quickly into the westbound lane to avoid a collision with the van.
When Ray turned his vehicle around to pursue the van, it turned into the parking lot of Curve's on East Broad Street.
When Ray pulled into the lot  at Curves', he said Henson was attempting to drive the van up an embankment on the other end of the property.
Upon approaching the van, Ray discovered that a female passenger in the vehicle appeared to be seriously injured.
He called for an ambulance immediately.
Henson was arrested at the scene by Smithville Police.
Judkins was transported to DeKalb Community Hospital, and later airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center where she died that same afternoon.
Police removed at least three empty Tequila bottles, numerous cans of beer, both empty and not-yet-consumed, and one bottle of Tequila which was approximately half-full.
Henson, whom police believe to have been extremely intoxicated at the time of the incident, told police that his accelerator “hung” and that his brakes "went out".
Henson will be arraigned in DeKalb County Criminal Court on April 11.
