Now that they have received their 501(c)3 tax exempt status, The DeKalb Coalition for the Humane Treatment of Animals is set to begin raising funds and looking at options for a new facility.Members of the coalition and concerned citizens met Thursday night at the county complex to discuss their options. While they revealed plans to seek the financial support of county and city governments, they also discussed the possibility of grants, and will seek donations from the public, as well as holding fundraising events. The organization hopes to raise the funds to create a new animal shelter that provides a “low kill” option for neglected, abandoned and abused animals in DeKalb County. The most-discussed site for a new shelter is near the location of the future solid waste transfer station behind Tenneco Manufacturing on Highway 70 east. The coalition’s board is scheduled to meet again at 6:30 on July 3 at the county complex.
