A Smithville husband and wife have been charged with forgery after allegedly passing a series of hot checks and using a stolen card.
Ricky Lane Evans, 46, faces two counts of forgery and one count of theft of property under $500. Sherry May Evans, 37, was charged with two counts of theft under $500, three counts of fraudulent use of a credit or debit card, and forgery.
According to Sheriff Patrick Ray, said the Evans’ stole checks Oct. 24, and Sherry Evans took a credit/debit card as well. Ricky Evans allegedly passed one of the checks with a forged signature at Wilson Bank & Trust in Smithville for $60 that same day.
Then, on Oct. 25, Sherry Evans reportedly used the stolen credit/debit card to spend $25.09 and $67.17 at the Dollar General Store, and at Redbox on Oct. 27 in the amount of $9.88.
The couple allegedly passed another forged check for $148.51 at Walmart in Smithville on Oct. 26.
His bond was set at $7,500. Her bond is $17,500. Both will be in court on November 17.
Another local husband and wife have been arrested for burglary and theft.
Samuel Malachi Murphy, 40, and 35-year-old Miranda Michelle Murphy were both arrested and charged with aggravated burglary and theft of property over $1,000 on Nov. 3.
The sheriff said the Murphy’s broke into a Cookeville Highway home on Sept. 16 by forcing their way through the front door. The Murphy’s allegedly stole $1,500 worth of property at the location.
Bond for each is $10,000, and they will appear in court on Nov. 17.
In a separate case, Miranda Murphy is charged with possession of methamphetamine for resale.
Ray said a deputy responded to an unwanted guest call at a residence on Cookeville Highway on Nov. 1, but by the time the officer arrived, the unwanted guest, who proved to be Murphy, had left the home. She was stopped on Cookeville Highway.
A search of Murphy’s vehicle reportedly revealed 0.6 grams of a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. She was placed under arrest.
Murphy’s bond was set at $5,000 on that charge, and she will appear in court on Nov. 17.
Donald Richard Atnip, Jr., 31, was charged with possession with intent to resale a Schedule VI drug (marijuana) on Oct. 31.
The sheriff said a detective spotted Atnip in his truck in the Pizza Hut parking lot. The lawman reportedly knew that Atnip had two warrants against him, and stopped and spoke with the man.
A search of Atnip’s truck allegedly revealed sandwich bags, scales, four small individual bags of a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana, and a Mason jar containing 1.06 ounces of a green, leafy substance also believed to be marijuana.
His bond was set at $7,500, and his court date is Nov. 10.
Shane Michael Downey, 40, was charged with evading arrest on Nov. 2.
Ray said a deputy dispatched to a Jacobs Pillar Road home to pick up Downey, who had active warrants against him, spotted Downey standing behind the house. When he saw the officer, Downey allegedly fled into the woods on foot, and continued running though the deputy ordered him to stop. Downey was subsequently found hiding in the woods and placed under arrest.
His bond is $1,500 and his court date is Nov. 17.
William Lee Bell, Jr., 66, of Dowelltown was charged with driving under the influence on Nov. 3.
The sheriff said a deputy dispatched to the area of Toad Road where a blue Chevrolet Blazer was observed driving recklessly and running vehicles off the road spotted the vehicle as it turned off of Nashville Highway onto Toad Road. The Chevy Blazer reportedly came to a stop in the roadway after it turned onto Toad Road.
The deputy found Bell to be the driver, and that his speech was slurred and he was very unsteady on his feet. The officer allegedly found two empty beer bottles in the rear floorboard of Bell’s vehicle.
Bell reportedly admitted to having been drinking, but refused to submit to field sobriety tasks.
His bond is $1,500 and his court date is Nov. 17.
Tyrone Lamont Jackson, 40, was charged with driving while suspended or revoked and cited for driving on roadways laned for travel on Nov. 7.
Ray said a deputy stopped Jackson for failure to maintain his lane of travel. Jackson’s automobile allegedly crossed the center line several times. During the traffic stop, the officer discovered that Jackson’s license was suspended on April 19, 2012.
His bond was set at $3,000, and he will appear in court on Dec. 1.
Jacob James Damon, 23, of McMinnville was charged with assault on Nov. 3.
The sheriff said that Damon assaulted another inmate by repeatedly hitting him with his fist causing a cut near the victim’s left eye while incarcerated at the jail. Damon also allegedly grabbed the victim and kept him from reaching the cell door.
His bond was set at $2,500.
