In search of great coffee

Steve Warner photo If you like a cup of coffee with a little kick, stop by Button Willow General Store on West Main. There you will find the finest in coffee and coffee accessories like French presses, grinders and homegrown honey to sweeten it up.

I have a fondness for a good cup of coffee. Those who have read here before probably know that about me so I was pleased to hear there’s a new location to get my favorite drink.

When I say coffee, I don’t mean the kind that comes out of my Mr. Coffee sometimes when I fail all attempts at a better alternative. I’m talking cappuccino and gourmet blends I grew accustomed to while serving overseas.
Button Willow

General Store – 109 W. Main Street Smithville

Button Willow General Store is the new moniker for what was called Treasures on Main and Knot Enough Tyme before after a little reorganizing and fine tuning and, of course – adding a beverage that can be enjoyed morning, noon and night – at least by me

Some people can’t drink coffee later in the day because they say it keeps them up nights. I have been lucky in that it doesn’t bother me. I guess I’m unaffected by caffeine.

On my first trip to the new Button Willow General Store I tried the caramel cappuccino and enjoyed that but noticed another interesting blend called Three Amigos which is a blend of Mocha coffee, cinnamon and cayenne which has now become my flavor of choice.

Angela Brown is now the sole proprietor of the location where once she was joined by Connie Tjarks. Brown said she wants to fine tune her inventory even more to stock those niche items you can’t find anywhere else.
I don’t recall seeing another location stocked with French presses for coffee lately but you can find them at Button Willow.

“It’s really awesome,” Brown said about the gourmet alternatives towards a good cup of coffee. “You do have to grind it correctly with French presses; you have to have a courser grind and we have the grinders in stock as well.
“I’m going more towards local and gourmet items - gourmet sea salts and olive oils,” Brown said. “You can also get hot tea by the cup, gourmet local honey and raw unfiltered honey and I’m trying to go more like things like that. It’s what people seem to want, quality gourmet items that might not be available elsewhere.”

In addition to the gourmet drinks and new items, Button Willow still carries the full line of Lodge cast iron cookware. When it gets a little warmer I think I am going to invest in some of that myself. Having become a full-time RV’er, I tend to eat from a can more often than not. My plan is to get some cast iron cookware and do some fireside cooking when it’s not freezing outside to improve my pallet just a bit.

The homemade soaps are still available, an admitted favorite item of mine, too. I guess anything that reminds me of yesteryear when we made things by hand and had food right from the field makes me happy.

Button Willow General store also offers Danish and other snacks to go with your favorite beverage.

Girl Scout Cookies – Preorder now or keep a lookout in February

Speaking of coffee, I would be amiss not to mention it’s that time of year again as Girl Scout cookies loom on the horizon. You've had the ability to preorder since Dec. 26 but beginning in February all your favorite locations will again be showing up to sell those delicious snacks I know I look forward to every year.

My favorite – The Thin Mints kept in the freezer.
