Tuesday, Sept. 12 - Wednesday, Sept. 13

Following a series of successful “Talking Jobs and Family” events earlier this week in Northeast Tennessee, Karl Dean for Governor today announced the campaign will host events in Gibson, Haywood, and Madison Counties next Tuesday, Sept. 12 and Wednesday, Sept. 13 to continue to address the issues that matter most to families: good jobs, schools, and healthcare.

“Earlier this week, I was privileged to tour the Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City. There I saw the extent of the opioid crisis devastating so many of our communities. I learned one in three babies born at the hospital are born suffering from opioid withdrawals, so many in fact, administrators had to open an additional NICU wing specifically designed to help ease the opioid-dependent infants’ suffering.

“I also had the opportunity to sit down with more than two dozen public school educators in Washington County as well as Northeast Community College leaders spearheading technical training and apprenticeship programs at the Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing. The objective in both settings was to discuss how best to prepare our students, pre-K through college, with the skillsets necessary to recruit well-paying jobs to our more rural towns and cities.

“Simply put, it’s all connected. I look forward to continuing these conversation with economic development, education, and healthcare leaders in Gibson, Haywood, and Madison Counties,” said Dean.

On Tuesday, Dean will visit Dinwiddie Farms in Trenton and meet with officials at the University of Tennessee’s Agriculture Research and Education Center at Milan to learn more about the challenges local farmers are facing, and discuss ideas about how best to grow the state’s agricultural industry.

Dean will later host his second teacher roundtable discussion of the “Talking Jobs and Family Across Tennessee” tour in Milan to hear from educators in surrounding area schools on what they believe the state’s next steps should be to better support the public school system.

On Wednesday, Dean will have private meetings with Jackson healthcare providers and Lane College faculty, ending the day with a casual gathering of interested voters in Brownsville to discuss, among other things, how to improve access to affordable healthcare.

During September and October, the statewide campaign launch will include stops in Anderson, Blount, Cheatham, Davidson, Franklin, Gibson, Hamilton, Haywood, Knox, Madison, Montgomery, Putnam, Rutherford, Shelby, and Weakley Counties. All future events and dates will be advised in detail.
