Large group visits the Big Apple
NY trip 1 and 2 017.jpg

Several people from DeKalb County have been enjoying their vacation in the Big Apple, New York City.  Mrs. Anita Puckett, a history teacher at DeKalb Middle School was director of two trips to the city.  The adventure started with an early morning flight into LaGuardia Airport to meet their guide for the week Ms. Pat.  First stop was the American Museum of Natural History, later a tour of the famous Radio Music City with pictures with the famous Rockettes.
New York is known for making tasty pizzas, so the group ate at the famous John’s Pizzeria before attending the play “Wicked” at Gershwin Theater.  This play shares a wonderful message of accepting people’s differences in a remix of the Wizard of Oz.
Everyone was glad to reach his or her motel room in the early a.m. hours.
The next day began with the group boarding a cruiser from New Jersey to tour the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, later in the day everyone learned more about how the immigrants lived by visiting the Lower Eastside Tenement Museum where they role played going back in time.  The late afternoon was spent exploring Chinatown and Little Italy, both proved to be a shopping experience for all to remember.
Early morning brought a tour of famous landmarks, including a bus tour of where the stars all live.  Each group enjoyed the walk through the beautiful Central Park, later enjoying a view of the city from the observation deck atop the Empire State building.
One of the biggest highlights of the trip was each group attending a major league baseball game.   Flight #1 enjoyed the Braves taking on the New York Met where the Brave won.
Flight #2 enjoyed the excitement of Yankee Stadium, seeing the New York Yankees play the Cleveland Indians, where the Yankees won.
New York is a city you always want to visit again and again.  Jerald and I had been once in the late 90’s and will certainly make another trip in our future.  It is known as the city that never sleeps and I’d say the 56 from trip one and the 36 from group two would certainly agree with that statement.  Much was learned and observed and we all would like to thank Mrs. Puckett for taking the time to prepare this history trip for the students and adults from DeKalb.  Next year she plans to revisit Washington D C, and back to New York in 2013.
